Interview conducted and written by Corissa Poley This is the second episode in the Queries Quintus series with WHALE; interviews with artists and writers containing five (quintus, in Latin) basic conversational queries. Cory Anotado has loved game shows since he was 4 years old. In recent years, he’s used his talents and skills as a game show host and game creator to begin an annual, British-inspired fundraising campaign for children with autism, and cancer patients. We’re here to interview Cory about game shows, and find out what the 24-hour Game Show Marathon is all about. Cory and his co-hosts, Bob Hagh and Christian Carrion, will be staying up for 24 hours and playing various games. Let’s find out how the game show will go down – and read for exclusive show facts. (1) Tell us about your history with game shows. Cory: Well, my history with game shows started when I was a child. My grandparents were the ones who raised me, and my grandmother, she worked the graveyard shift at a hospital for kids. In the mornings, she’d putter around and watch TV. Most of the time in the early 90′s when you’re watching TV in the daytime it’s either [...]

Interview conducted and written by Corissa Poley This is the first in the Queries Quintus series with WHALE; interviews with artists and writers containing five (quintus, in Latin) basic conversational queries. Our very first guest is none other than the talented illustrator and animator Vince Mascoli, of Portland, OR. Vince has been drawing since he can remember, and has led projects such as Amanda Palmer/Evelyn Evelyn’s Sandy Fishnets music video since he graduated from UArts Philadelphia in 2009. His video animation Dear Dad, Love Maria was featured on various LGBT and trans, and media sites such as Yet Another Magazine. We’re glad to have him on Queries Quintus today, and we’re going to ask him questions about comics and his new webcomic, Boy & Terrence Marmalade. Vince currently works in retail during the day and nighttimes as a comic artist and animator. He also likes to hang out with his fiancee Mallory and his pit bull Tippi, and regularly drink delicious red ales. Sometimes, he gets rad on rollerskates and goes to the skate park. You can view his portfolio here. Let’s get started. (1) How did you come up with the idea for Boy and Terrence Marmalade? Vince: Basically an [...]

Old political pulp that still has its charms (Thanks, Edgar Rice Burroughs.) By Corissa Poley When I saw the book cover of The Princess of Mars (1912), it was in another book about its illustrator, Frank Frazetta. I didn’t expect to be so engrossed by the cover of the book on first sight, nor did I expect to read that the book’s author was the one and only Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the Tarzan series. I knew Burroughs had been a pulp-fiction writer in the early 20th century, but I had never heard of this space series. As a scifi nerd I was immediately intrigued, and so I borrowed the first book from the library. Though these books were surely well known, and have been around for about a hundred years, I had never seen or heard of them before. The premise is that John Carter, a red-blooded fightin’ Virginian, also of the grey-coated Southern boys, ends up on Mars after a brief out-of-body space travel experience. He finds that his earthly body mass behaves much differently, and then discovers an alien race; thus the story begins. The various societies on Mars (called Barsoom by the people that inhabit its distant, dusty [...]

Recently an independent Argentinian publisher, Eterna Cadencia, released an advertisement that highlighted the importance of The Book That Can’t Wait. This isn’t a joke; if you don’t read the book the story literally disappears. The Latin author anthology’s ink is designed to react with everyday elements such as air and light over the course of sixty days, ultimately beginning to fade. Why do such a thing? The initial premise is one that should make us pause for a moment. “Books are very patient objects,” insists the film. “If people don’t read their first books, they’ll never make it to a second.” An interesting challenge. How often do we put books aside in favor of other activities? In a culture full of intense visual stimulation and media at every turn, do people have the patience for books any more? Even primary education has become entertainment in some ways, seeking to teach through visual stimulation rather than encourage students to read a textbook. Are we more interested in catering to visual media than trying to get back to reading? In any case, this publisher combats the dilemma with a seemingly easy solution: creating ink that fades after the first two months of the book’s [...]

WHALE goes in depth to discuss the now-classic board game, Settlers of Catan, with its inventor. By Corissa Poley One day, many men in gray cloaks come to visit in the night, and steal all of your grain. Bit by bit, they snatch up your most valuable resource. You are broke. For years you don’t have any more grain. What could you have to done deserve this? Was it because you built the longest road across the island? This is the game of Catan. A game that changes every time you play it anew; it is a game that challenges your ideals about economic structure and brings your attention to the roll of the die. You gather what you settle on truly reap ing what you have sown in the most essential moments. Though it seems to be a simple board game, Settlers of Catan defies conventional methods and is instead a community oriented structure, calling all players to the island. It is something that shifts between politics and economics within the story; enemies become friends when a favorable number is rolled. The robber does not visit frequently because everything is congenial. But in one more turn, the game can [...]

The little iPhone app that does. By Corissa Poley Admittedly, I am a terrible to-do-er. I have lists all over my desk from various clients and projects, but none of them are ever gathered in one place. In an attempt to organize my life better, I infrequently download new iPhone apps that are supposedly going to help me. I end up ignoring them, because they are ugly, or just don’t seem to fit the to-do list inside my head. But Any.DO is different. I initially downloaded it because the aesthetic appeal was simple and elegant. The app not only failed to disappoint, but stunned me with its beautiful interface and minimalistic design. Any.DO is very clean, but I would not dare to call it simple. It lacks the awkwardness of other to-do apps. The options are not many, but few. It’s easy on the eyes and has fun features that make getting things done a little more enticing. The strike-through feature, for example. If you’re done with something on your to-do list, simply drag your finger across the screen and it is “scratched off” the list. A strike-through appears and the text goes grey, moving out of your way but [...]

We’re glad you’ve been along for the ride, and for those of you that have followed us into this final week, we salute you. We’ve come to love some characters more and hate others in this fresh look at the series. Let’s get this party started! Episode 11 – “Trash” Alex Why does Mal trust Saffron? Perhaps “trust” is a misnomer in this particular instance, yet Mal does go along with her heist plan, and risks himself and his crew in the process. This is the very same woman who tricked Mal into a fake marriage, poisoned him, kicked Wash in the head, and incapacitated most of the ship’s inhabitants before setting Serenity on course to be waylaid. Perhaps on some level he’s influenced by Saffron’s beauty and obvious manipulation skills, but maybe there’s desperation in his decision, too. The crew of Serenity have been scraping by for some time now, and the idea of a fruitful job is always attractive, despite obvious potential for disaster. Inevitably, Saffron’s true plan unfurls and leaves [...]

Firefly Fridays Finale Countdown This is the last character profile before our big showdown tonight! Watch out for our last and longest set of reviews on the last four episodes of the show! Character Profile: River Tam Serenity’s “Reader,” “Psychic,” “Teenager” “She understands… She doesn’t comprehend.” There’s no two ways about it, River is a train wreck handcrafted by the Alliance. Her baggage car has derailed, smashing every last suitcase of emotional and cognitive coping skill onto the side of the tracks. As a character for the show, she offers another wild card to an already joker filled deck. But as a representation of society, specifically adolescence, she is spot on – social isolation and confusion with random acts of kindness and violence thrown in for good measure. What little we know of her background is simple – a young, inquisitive and very bright girl born into privilege, trusting the adults around her who promise to keep her safe and offer her the opportunity to learn and grow. But as so often happens, the adults use her for their own gains and River becomes nothing more than a lab rat running through their maze. She is symbolic of yet [...]

Firefly Fridays Finale Countdown! We’ll be sharing our last character profiles with you over the next three days – just before the big Friday at the end of this week, where we’ll finish out the series in a 4 episode showdown. Character Profile: Zoe Washburne Ship’s Second in Command “First rule of battle Little One, don’t ever let them know where you are.” From the very beginning of the series it is clear that Zoe is a formidable character. Her physical strength and aptitude for combat become almost legendary, leading one to believe that even the raucous Jayne will think twice, or more, before challenging her. When it comes to her loyalty and devotion there can be little doubt that “Wash,” Mal, and the crew of Serenity, are the top three on her list. Their rankings change with the situation however, as pragmatism and careful thought direct her every move. Zoe is the epitome of self control, to such a point that it is a wonder that she and “Wash” married. The rare glimpses of emotion we do get to see are when she ravages her husband, or pulls off a “job” successfully. Joss Whedon must have used the old [...]
